The “Men as Navigators (MAN) for Health” Initiative

In keeping with it’s mission, STBF has
embarked on a new and exciting health
initiative in collaboration with the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill called “Men As Navigators for Health.” This project seeks to understand and improve health behaviors of African American men living in Wake County, with special emphasis in Southeast Raleigh. The long–term objective of this program is to reduce Heart Disease among African American men.
Rationale for the Project
- In Wake County, African American men are disproportionately affected by heart disease when compared to white men.
- In North Carolina, more African Americanmen die of heart disease than men of any other race.
- Heart disease can be prevented by participating in healthy behaviors, such as screenings for risk factors, healthy eating, and physical activity.
The project addresses these concerns:
- High risk behaviors and attitudes
- Health disparities
MAN for Health is a multi-level intervention program that involves activities suited to the priorities and lifestyles of African American men. Examples of programs and activities that are being developed for participants include but are not limited to:
- Walking Clubs for Men
- Biking Clubs
- Food Preparation Demonstrations (significant others are included)
- Scheduled workout activities at athletic or recreation centers
The sky is the limit to what men can do when they are committed and join forces to change their lifestyles for better health and longevity.
