24TH ANNUAL CONFERENCE

The State of the Black Family
in Wake County in 2004

Strengthening The Black Family, Inc. is proud to announce the convening of its' 24th Annual Conference. This year's conference will be held at Fred J. Carnage Middle School, Raleigh, North Carolina on September 24 and 25, 2004. The event will feature a forum entitled "The State of the Black Family in Wake County in 2004." The focus of discussions will be; Where are we? Where are we going? How do we get there?

Conference Forum Highlights
Youth Talent Showcase
Talent of area youth will be showcased on Friday September 24, 2004 at 7:00 pm. in the Carnage Middle School auditorium. Youth groups and individuals will participate by displaying expressive and creative talents in the performing and visual arts. Admission to this event is free.

The Forum
In this the fiftieth year of the May 1954 Brown v Board of Education decision and the fortieth year of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, the Forum will examine the progress of the Black family in light of the impact of these two historical events. Has the Black family made substantial progress in the last fifty years? Has the Black family declined? What has happened to impact the Black family and what has been the family's response?

Panelists with a wealth of knowledge in the areas of Economics, Housing, Health, Faith, Social Justice, Education and Community Commitment and Involvement will be invited to share their perspectives as they relate to the Black family. Panelists are Dr. Ted Parrish, Mrs. Thelma Lennon, Mr. D'Weston Haywood, Atty. Dan Blue, Dr. David C. Forbes, Ms Andrea Harris and Mr. Orage Quarles.

Family of the Year Awards Luncheon
Strengthening The Black Family, Inc. each year celebrates and recognizes African American families that demonstrate strength and perseverance in maintaining a cohesive family unit and are strong role models to other families in the Wake County community. On September 25, 2004 a traditional, single parent and extended family will be honored.

Who Should Attend?
Individuals, families, groups, service providers, faith communities, community-based organizations, service organizations, educators, policymakers, and community advocates.
